Social housing is long-term rental housing for people on very low to moderate incomes that may be experiencing ‘rental stress’ in the private market. It can be provided by community housing organisations like Hume, the state government or by Aboriginal housing organisations.
Visit sectionAffordable housing exists to provide secure and reasonably priced rental options for individuals and families who are earning low to moderate incomes. It helps bridge the gap for those who find private rental housing too expensive but don’t qualify for social housing.

Hume Community Housing is working with Homes NSW to review potential opportunities to deliver new social and affordable housing across the Hunter region in response to the growing housing crisis.
Nine sites across Hume’s Maitland and Raymond Terrace portfolios are currently being assessed. These assessments are at an early stage, and any proposal would be subject to funding availability and would need to progress through planning, technical, consultation and approval processes before any development could proceed.
No final decision has been made to redevelop any of the sites. Hume and Homes NSW will continue to consider planning requirements, site suitability, community impacts and the needs of existing and future customers as the proposals are reviewed.
Hume is committed to supporting every existing customer who may be affected. If a proposal progresses, Hume will work directly with each household to understand individual circumstances, secure suitable alternative housing and provide practical relocation support before any construction activity begins.
Should the developments proceed to construction, the new housing would focus on meeting local need, including housing for vulnerable cohorts and key workers who are increasingly affected by housing stress across the Hunter.
“The Hunter urgently needs more social and affordable housing. As one of Australia’s fastest-growing regional areas, the demand for safe, secure and affordable homes continues to outpace supply. Working with Homes NSW, Hume is carefully reviewing every viable opportunity to increase supply while ensuring that existing customers remain at the centre of our planning and decision-making,” a Hume spokesperson said.
“These proposals remain subject to extensive assessment and approval processes. If any site moves forward, impacted customers will be supported throughout the process, including to secure suitable alternative housing before construction begins.”
Hume will continue to engage with customers, Homes NSW, planning authorities and relevant stakeholders as assessments progress and will provide further information when it becomes available.
