Social housing

Social housing is long-term rental housing for people on very low to moderate incomes that may be experiencing ‘rental stress’ in the private market. It can be provided by community housing organisations like Hume, the state government or by Aboriginal housing organisations.

Energy saving tips

Energy rating calculator
More stars equals more savings! Energy Rating Labels are an Australian Government requirement on new appliances, making it easy to compare running costs. When comparing similar sized appliances, look for more stars on the label to save money. Make sure the energy consumption score is low as it will be cheaper to run. Before making your next purchase

Tips to Reduce Your Energy Bill

  • Energy-Efficient Appliances: Choose appliances with high energy efficiency ratings (e.g., Energy Star certified). These appliances consume less energy and can lead to substantial savings over time.
  • Lighting: Use energy-efficient LED bulbs instead of traditional incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs last longer and consume less electricity.
  • Insulation: Properly insulate your home to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Insulation helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature and reduces the need for excessive heating or cooling.
  • Unplug and Switch Off: Turn off lights, electronics, and appliances when not in use. Even on standby mode, devices consume energy. Unplugging unused electronics can help reduce energy wastage.
  • Hot Water Usage: Reduce hot water usage by taking shorter showers and washing laundry in cold water whenever possible. Insulating your hot water tank can also help retain heat, reducing the need for reheating.

Additional Support

  • Energy Assistance Programs: Check if there are any energy assistance programs available in your area (above). These programs can provide financial support or resources to help low-income households manage their energy bills

Remember, small changes in your daily habits can make a big difference in reducing your energy bills. By adopting energy-efficient practices, you not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable future. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact Hume Housing.
