Social housing

Social housing is long-term rental housing for people on very low to moderate incomes that may be experiencing ‘rental stress’ in the private market. It can be provided by community housing organisations like Hume, the state government or by Aboriginal housing organisations.

Affordable housing

Affordable housing exists to provide secure and reasonably priced rental options for individuals and families who are earning low to moderate incomes. It helps bridge the gap for those who find private rental housing too expensive but don’t qualify for social housing.

Transitional Housing Programs

Hume Housing offers a range of Specialist Housing programs

Our Transitional Housing Programs offer stable, medium-term housing and support for individuals and families.

What programs are available?

These programs provide a secure place to live for 12 to 18 months while we help you find and maintain long-term housing. Through personalised support, we assist you in achieving your goals and building the skills to live independently.

Supported Housing Program

Hume Housing’s Supported Housing program provides a vital safety net for customers experiencing or at risk of homelessness, offering transitional housing for up to 18 months.

icon What does the Supported Housing Program involve?

This program is delivered in partnership with a range of support agencies to ensure customers receive both housing stability and tailored case management support.

Customers in the program benefit from safe, secure housing, tenancy education, and support to understand their rights and responsibilities under the Residential Tenancies Act 2010.

Eligibility and Program Requirements
To access the program, customers must meet eligibility criteria for Social Housing based on residency and income status and be nominated by a partner agency.

While in the program, customers work closely with both Hume and their support agency to follow a clear case plan and exit strategy. This collaborative approach helps customers develop the skills and rental history needed to transition successfully into long-term, sustainable housing.

Hume collaborates with specialised support agencies through formal agreements, with these agencies nominating their clients for housing opportunities. Program participants face a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Domestic and family violence
  • Youth support
  • Mental health issues
  • Drug and alcohol dependency
  • Family and parenting challenges
  • Transitioning from rehabilitation or incarceration
  • Living with physical or psychosocial disabilities

Hume Community Housing will manage the tenancy for the property, while the support organisation will provide ongoing case management, including comprehensive exit planning.

Call us on 1800 004 300 if you have any questions about our Support Housing program and partners.

Housing Independence Program

Hume Housing’s Housing Independence Program is designed to support individuals and families in achieving long-term housing stability and independence.

The program provides tailored services and support to help tenants manage and sustain their tenancies in the private rental market, as well as transition from social housing to independent living.

Hume Housing’s Housing Independence Program is designed to support individuals and families in achieving long-term housing stability and independence. The program provides tailored services and support to help tenants manage and sustain their tenancies in the private rental market, as well as transition from social housing to independent living.

Key features of the Housing Independence Program include:

  • Personalised Support: The program offers one-on-one assistance, where caseworkers work closely with tenants to develop a housing plan tailored to their specific needs. This may include addressing financial challenges, budgeting, and securing rental properties.
  • Tenancy Sustainment: The program aims to help tenants maintain their tenancies by providing support with paying rent, managing arrears, and resolving disputes with landlords. This helps prevent eviction and ensures tenants can stay in stable, affordable housing.
  • Life Skills Development: Tenants are offered support to develop key life skills, such as budgeting, maintaining a household, and navigating tenancy agreements. This empowers tenants to take control of their living situations and move towards greater independence.
  • Access to Resources: The program connects tenants with other services that may assist with employment, education, and health, improving their overall well-being and ability to maintain stable housing.
  • Transition to Independent Living: For those in social housing, the program also assists in transitioning to private rental or other housing options when appropriate. This includes helping with bond loans, rental subsidies, and securing a suitable property.

Hume Community Housing’s Housing Independence Program is focused on fostering long-term independence, stability, and self-sufficiency, ensuring individuals and families can successfully navigate housing challenges and thrive in their communities.
