What is Disability Accommodation?
SDA in New South Wales is housing designed specifically for individuals with significant functional impairments or high support needs. It is funded under the NDIS and provides options that allow customers to live more independently while receiving the necessary supports.
What are the key features of SDA?
Customised Design: SDA homes are built to meet various accessibility needs, with features such as wider doorways, ceiling hoists, or assistive technologies.
Types of Housing: SDA options include shared housing, apartments, villas, townhouses, and houses.
Purpose: The focus is on improving the quality of life for people with disabilities by enabling them to live as independently as possible while receiving necessary support.
Who is eligible for SDA?
NDIS participants may qualify for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding if they meet the SDA eligibility criteria, have extreme functional impairment, or require a high level of support.
SDA funding is provided to participants who, even with home modifications and assistive technologies, still need significant in-home support from care workers to manage daily activities.
To check if you may be eligible for SDA funding go to the NDIS site.
What steps should I take before applying?
Become an NDIS Participant
If you’re not already part of the NDIS, apply on the NDIS website or call 1800 800 110.
Assessment for SDA Eligibility
Work with your NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to see if you qualify for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). You’ll need to provide evidence from healthcare professionals about your housing and support needs.
Include SDA in Your NDIS Plan
If eligible, SDA funding will be added to your NDIS plan. This funding covers the housing costs, not rent or personal care services.
Find SDA Providers
Use the NDIS Provider Finder to find SDA providers in NSW, including community housing organizations and private developers.
Apply Directly to Providers
Once you have SDA funding, contact providers to apply for available housing. Each provider may have its own application process, which could require documents like your NDIS plan and preferences.
We work with trusted Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers to offer suitable, long-term housing options for individuals with SDA funding, ensuring a seamless and supportive experience.
