Social housing

Social housing is long-term rental housing for people on very low to moderate incomes that may be experiencing ‘rental stress’ in the private market. It can be provided by community housing organisations like Hume, the state government or by Aboriginal housing organisations.

Construction begins on social homes for women and seniors in Parramatta

calendar May 26, 2026

Construction is now underway to deliver 66 new social and affordable homes in North Parramatta,
including 28 social homes dedicated to women and seniors.

It forms part of the Minns Labor Government’s record-breaking Building Homes for NSW program,
which will deliver 8,400 new social homes and 21,000 affordable and market homes.

The project is taking seven former fibro and weatherboard cottages that were no longer fit for
purpose and transforming them into more than 60 units across three sites.

Site 1 is due for completion in October 2026 and will provide 22 affordable homes, including:
• 12 one-bedroom units
• 10 two-bedroom units

Site 2 is due for competition in September 2026 and will provide 16 affordable homes, including:
• 6 one-bedroom units
• 10 two-bedroom units

Site 3 has just commenced construction and is due for completion in April 2027 and will
provide 28 social homes, including:
• 20 x one-bedroom units
• 8 x two-bedroom units

The NSW Government is working with Housing Australia and community housing provider Hume
Housing to deliver the new homes.

Partnerships with the Australian Government and valued Community Housing Providers are critical to
deliver desperately needed housing.

Hume Housing will own and manage affordable housing on two of the three sites, while social
housing on the third site will be owned by Homes NSW and managed by Hume Housing.

All up, the development will provide safe and secure housing for more than 100 residents across the
three sites, within walking distance of Western Sydney University and less than 3-kms from the
Parramatta CBD.

Key workers in health and education will be prioritised for the affordable homes, while many of the
social homes will go to women over the age of 55.

The Minns Labor Government is firmly committed to building more homes for those who need it,
including seniors, victims of domestic and family violence, and essential workers.

Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson said
“This is another example of the NSW Government and the sector working together to create much
needed housing.

“Many of the new homes are going to women aged over 55, one of the fastest-growing group at risk
of homelessness, and that’s exactly who we need to be supporting with secure, long-term housing.”

Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said
“We’re getting on with the job of building more homes in NSW and we’re making sure they are built in
areas where people want to live.

“This location is perfect for the key frontline workers who are one of the priority groups for these new
units. I’m also excited to see another 28 social homes for seniors in my community, to help us bring
down the waitlist.”

Hume Community Housing CEO, Brad Braithwaite said
“This project demonstrates what’s possible when government, community housing providers and
partners work together.

By delivering more social and affordable homes in the heart of Western Sydney we’re helping ensure
more people have access to safe, secure housing in their community.”

Housing Australia CEO, Scott Langford said
“Housing Australia is proud to play a central role in turning national investment into tangible
outcomes. Here in North Parramatta, we’re supporting the delivery of safe, well-located and
accessible homes that will offer long-term and affordable housing security for older women,
essential workers, families on lower incomes and vulnerable Australians.”
