Social housing

Social housing is long-term rental housing for people on very low to moderate incomes that may be experiencing ‘rental stress’ in the private market. It can be provided by community housing organisations like Hume, the state government or by Aboriginal housing organisations.

What we do

Having a safe, secure and affordable home is a human right

As one of Australia’s largest diversified community housing providers, Hume Housing services nearly 5,000 properties and 9,000 customers and are at the forefront of tackling the housing emergency.

Addressing the housing crisis

Australia is currently facing a housing crisis, with a growing number of individuals and families unable to access safe, secure, and affordable housing. People experiencing prolonged poverty, fleeing domestic abuse, struggling with addiction, or living with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to homelessness.

Even those with low or moderate incomes are increasingly affected by housing insecurity, as the supply of affordable housing continues to fall short of demand.

A shortage of homes

Research from the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) highlights that lower-priced rentals now make up only 13% of private rental stock - down from 60% just 25 years ago.
